Indy Fuel coach has eye on the playoffs this season

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Indy Fuel is getting ready to start their new season this Friday at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum, and their head coach thinks there's a good chance they'll make the playoffs.

Indy Fuel Head Coach Bernie John spoke with WTHR's Bob Kravitz Tuesday.

"We're a high-scoring team with a lot of guys that can do a lot of different things," said John.

John says this season's team will bring up-tempo hockey to Indianapolis. "That's what we want to play. We want to play a speed game. Get the puck going north, as we call it, as quickly as possible, and really put a lot of pressure on the other team's defense," he said. "At this level, a lot of times there's a lot of development players, and you find that a lot on the defense side of the puck. You want to make sure to make them make mistakes because they get so nervous in games."

Fans can look for pressure and speed - 30 shots a game at least, John said.

There are just a handful of athletes remaining from last year's team. John says this season, fans can expect to see players who can think the game. "We want guys that the instinct there is to think of a hockey play - every time they get the puck, they want to make a hockey play," he said. "That's what we look for in our guys and that's what we've created here."
