Indiana's 211 helpline gets more than 350,000 requests annually

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - February 11 is National 211 Day.

The idea to raise awareness for the 211 helpline and free social services.

Julie Johns-Cole, director of Indiana's 211 Partnership and Alexa Hornak, SNAP Outreach Coordinator, joined us Monday on Eyewitness News at Noon.

Last year, Indiana 211 got more than 350,000 requests and made more than 700,00 referrals.

They're available at time of crisis and for everyday issues. In fact, we learned that the top needs for Hoosiers include utilities, housing, food, health care and education.

And there's more than one way to reach the services offered by the 211 line. You can also call, toll-free, 866-211-9966 weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

National 211 Day is celebrated by various 211 organizations across the country to raise awareness for the 211 helpline and free social services.

211 is a free and confidential service that helps people find the local resources they need. Community navigators in Indiana field calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help people in need.

211 provides callers with information about and referrals to social services for every day needs and in times of crisis. Callers receive referrals to local agencies that provide food, clothing, mental health and addiction help, health care, housing and utility assistance, education, family aid, and much more.

In FY17/18, IN211 answered nearly 350,000 requests for help and completed over 700,000 referrals to Hoosiers. Three of IN211’s top reported needs are utilities, housing, and food.
