VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) - State Police arrested an Indianapolis man Thursday for driving drunk with children in the car.

State Police dispatchers got the call around 2:45 p.m. about a dark passenger car heading west on Interstate 70 that was driving erratically and hit a guardrail.

A trooper found the car about 10 miles from the Illinois state line. It was partially on the shoulder and partially down an embankment facing the road, and it was on fire.

The trooper and a Vigo County Sheriff's deputy pulled the driver, identified as Christopher Mack, 37, of Indianapolis, and two children out of the car, and another trooper put out the fire.

Field sobriety tests indicated that Mack was under the influence of a controlled substance, and police say he refused to submit to a certified chemical test.

He was taken to a Terre Haute hospital for medical clearance, then to the Vigo County jail where he is facing several charges:

  • Operating a Vehicle while intoxicated with a passenger less than 18 years of age, Class 6 Felony (2 counts)
  • Neglect of a dependent, Class 6 Felony (2 counts)
  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, Class A Misdemeanor
  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, Class C Misdemeanor
  • Driving While Suspended (Prior), Class A Misdemeanor
  • Criminal Mischief, Class A Misdemeanor

The two children, who were in car seats, were turned over to the Vigo County Department of Child Services, which is also investigating the case.
