INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — A new "family-friendly" playspace is coming to downtown.

Indy Parks, the Indianapolis Colts, the Indianapolis Parks Foundation, Downtown Indy, Inc. and neighborhood groups announced plans for a "Canal Playspace, a creative and fun playground for children and adults of all ages."

The playspace will be located near Walnut Street on the north end of the downtown Canal. The space will include a vertical climbing tower, spinner bowl, nets , stepping stones and city views.

The project will be funded by the Indianapolis Colts Foundation.

“The City of Indianapolis and Indianapolis Colts are taking major steps to help families stay healthy by creating a first of its kind playground on the downtown Canal Walk,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “As parks continue to be a vital component of thriving communities, the Canal Playspace will become a special place for our residents to enjoy. Together with Indy Parks, we are committed to enhancing our city’s parks and greenspaces and reshaping the way families think about play and fitness.”

The Canal Playspace will span about an acre and connect to the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.

"The Parks Foundation is excited to see the Downtown Canal Playspace vision become a reality," said Parks Foundation vice president Jenny Burrough. "Through thoughtful design and input from community stakeholders, we are excited to see how this new addition will complement existing use of this space, welcome more children and families, and benefit the experience along the entire Downtown Canal Walk."

The playspace will open in September.
