Indianapolis Boy Scout building picnic tables for IMPD officers

Zach Luther

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - This spring, IMPD officers will have a chance to enjoy some time outdoors, thanks to a young man's Eagle Scout project.

Fourteen-year-old Zach Luther plans to build picnic tables outside each of the department's district headquarters. The tables will feature a blue line down the middle.

Part of the proceeds at a local pizza restaurant Wednesday night went toward the project.

Luther credits an IMPD homicide detective for getting him interested in Scouts when he was in first grade. Now, he says the project is his way of giving back.

"Most Scouts, we just love the outdoors, so I'm trying to bring the love of outdoors to police officers," said Luther, a student at Franklin Central High School.

The picnic tables cost over $1,000 to build. Before Wednesday's fundraiser, Luther said he had raised close to $500.
