IMPD officer stable after getting shot on east side by shoplifting suspect

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – Metro police confirm an officer was shot on the city's east side Sunday evening.

The incident occurred near East 25th Street and North Post Road around 7:30.


Police say the officer was responding to a call for a shoplifter at Lowe's near 25th and Post Road. The officer saw the suspect running and chased him down. That's when police say the officer and the suspect fought and the officer was shot.

IMPD says the officer was awake and breathing when he was taken to Eskenazi Hospital.

Police say the officer is stable and still being treated. Police have not yet released the identity of the officer who was shot or any information on the suspect who shot him at this time.

An official statement was released by Indianapolis Marion County Council President Vop Osili​:

"I am extremely grateful for the service of all the dedicated men and women of IMPD, and particularly to those who came to the immediate aid of their fellow officer wounded in yesterday's shooting. We are very fortunate that our wounded IMPD officer is in good condition today. I ask all residents to join me in praying for his quick and complete recovery and for the safety of all of our first responders."
