INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Metropolitan Police have created an “E-Commerce Exchange Zone” at each IMPD district headquarters for people to meet and complete their online purchases and transactions.

Police have seen a nationwide increase in crime during such transactions, so IMPD is using this approach to deter crime by designated their front parking lots or lobbies as the Online Purchase Safety Zone throughout the city.

These areas in district headquarters feature 24-hour video surveillance.

Police hope residents who answer advertisements for online retailers such as E-Bay, Craigslist, OfferUp, Facebook and others can finalize their business transactions in a safe place. Although police will not be monitoring the private transactions, the program is designed to provide a known, well-lit and secure location to conduct business.

Citizens should request the other person meet them at one of the IMPD E-Commerce Zones, but if the other party declines, then police say this a sign of “buyer beware."

"E-Commerce Exchange Zones” are available at the following police districts:

North District Headquarters - 3120 E. 30th Street
Lobby Open Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Closed Holidays)

Police say residents cannot have purchases sent to any of these locations, and no illegal transactions will be permitted, including drugs and guns.

Large, bulky items that would disrupt police business are also not allowed.

Video surveillance operates 24-hours a day so anyone using the “E-Commerce Exchange Zone” is going to be recorded.

Police say meetings need no prior authorization or police response.
