INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Police in Indianapolis are investigating an overnight chase that ended in the suspect's death as an apparent suicide.

The pursuit took place on the south side early Monday morning after a traffic stop. Officers say the male driver took off from the stop on South East Street near Sumner Avenue and led them west to Interstate 65 and Keystone Avenue. That's where police say they approached the vehicle and found the man inside with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police broke into the vehicle and called medics, who attempted life-saving efforts. But the man died at the scene.

Police have not shared the dead man's identity. The coroner will release his name once family has been notified.

Southbound lanes of I-65 were shut down for approximately three hours overnight during the investigation, but have since reopened.

Anyone with further information about this incident should call the IMPD Homicide Office at (317) 327.3475.
