MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. - One person is dead and four others were hurt in a crash Friday night on Interstate 70 in Morgan County.

It happened just after 8:00 pm in the eastbound lanes of the highway, not far from the Hendricks County line.

The crash closed eastbound lanes of I-70 for several hours.

State police said a preliminary investigation indicated the driver of an eastbound passenger van with five occupants failed to slow for "a slow moving or nearly stopped" semi tractor pulling a trailer. The driver swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid collision but hit the back of the trailer.

The van driver, Shane Oakley, 43, of Greenup, IL, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other occupants of the van were taken to hospitals, one of them in critical condition.

The two occupants of the semi tractor were not injured.

Toxicology results, a matter of routine in such crashes, are pending.
