Howard County man accused of killing newborn due back in court

HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) — A murder trial continues Thursday morning for a Howard County man accused of killing a newborn baby.

Jaquail Smith, 23, appeared in court on Wednesday for the first day of the trial.

According to our news gathering partners at the Kokomo Tribune, Smith was babysitting his girlfriend's 8-week-old baby while she ran errands.

When she returned home, her son wasn't breathing properly.

Police say the infant suffered several injuries and died from blunt force trauma.

If Smith is convicted of murder, he could spend life in prison without the possibility of parole.
