Historic east side church saved from wrecking ball
CUMBERLAND (WTHR) - A new deal will save a historic Indianapolis church from the wrecking ball.
TWG Development will buy the old St. John United Church of Christ in Cumberland and build new senior housing on the land around the century-old building.
Giant Eagle was originally going to buy the church to tear it down and build a new grocery store, but the company pulled out after neighbors and the city fought the plan.
The church, which originally served as a place of worship for hundreds of German immigrants on Indianapolis' east side, is the namesake for German Church Road.
