Healthier options for Easter baskets


INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - For kids getting Easter and candy go hand in hand. If you don't want your kids to load up on sugar, there are some healthier and fun alternatives.

Kaitlyn Wong, a dietitian with Community Health Network, suggests giving chocolate instead of jelly beans or Peeps. Wong says you should also go with the fun size instead of the full size. Wong was also able to get creative by turning some healthy food options such as a cheese stick into a bunny and a cup of fruit into a peep.

Here is a list of some tips from Community Health Network on candy control:

  1. The problem--kids fill up on Easter basket treats, this raises their blood sugar...they go from climbing up the walls to a major crash that will likely mean a bad attitude
  2. The solution starts with getting your kids involved--talk about limits BEFORE the basket time
  3. Let kids pick one treat from their basket with limits (ex. 2-3 fun size bars or half a king size)
  4. Keep treat time around meal time (make treats a dessert, not a snack)
  5. Put the baskets away (out of sight, out of mind)
  6. Don't throw away those wrappers (keep them in a clear container, to keep a closer eye on sugar intake)
