INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - It's the middle of the night and you wake up with a painful toothache. Your dentist doesn't open for hours and you don't even have an appointment.

If it were a medical emergency, you would go to urgent care. But where do you go when the problem is with your teeth?

A central Indiana dentist has created a solution, forming what he believes is the first and and only 24-hour dental clinic in the country.

"We had a lot of patients that were calling in after hours with toothaches, and we decided to try to do what we could do to help them during their time of pain," said Dr. Dean Stratman, founder of 24 Hour Dental Care.

In 2014, "24 Hour Dental Care" opened its first location downtown. The next year, the clinic moved to the city's south side at U.S. 31 South in Southport Centre. Patient demand has grown so strong, that the clinic opened a second location earlier this month on the north side. The newest clinic is in the Indiana Lighting building, south of 82nd Street between Shadeland and I-69.

Patients don't need an appointment for care. In fact, the clinics are walk-in only. Most major dental insurance plans are accepted, including Indiana Medicaid and the Healthy Indiana Plan.

"We believe we are the only ones that are open 24 hours a day in the entire world. We found a few that say the are, but we've called them in the middle of the night and they're not really open."

The office is staffed with receptionists, dentists and dental assistants. They can perform common emergency and cosmetic procedures like extractions and root canals.

The clinic also plans to open two new locations by the end of the year, including one in Avon. The owners hope to expand to other states next year.
