INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Monument Circle was full of spirit and competition Friday afternoon. It wasn't the iconic race around the oval, but instead a race around the circle on pedal wagons called the Handlebar Hot Lap.

"We've got 48 teams in a fierce, no-holds-barred competition on these hot lap machines behind us," Mayor Joe Hogsett said.

The Handlebar Hot Lap is put on by Downtown Indy and the HandleBar.

The event kicked off with the Indianapolis Fire Department competing against the Indianapolis Police Department in the Heroes Lap. The fire department easily won the checkered flag.

One local company competing, SupplyKick, says it's a fun way to celebrate May in Indy.

"We're here to win!," said Jake Smith, a SupplyKick team member.

"We're absolutely here to win," Nathan Harry, also from SupplyKick, said. "Just having Indianapolis set this up is perfect."

"We've got a phenomenal team and it's so fun to be out here," Smith said. "Indianapolis is great for this kind of stuff. It's just a perfect day"

"It is so neat to bring our community together, especially our amazing downtown employees and it's just a way to celebrate the month of May in a way that you've never experienced," said Downtown Indy's Jacqueline Eckhardt.

This is the fourth year for the hot lap.
