CARMEL, Ind. (WTHR) - On February 13, the day before Valentine's Day, it's "Galentine's Day." It's a day to show love for the ladies in your life.

Leslie Knope, Amy Poehler's character from NBC's "Parks and Recreation," came up with the idea on an episode nine years ago. She and her lady friends ditched their husbands and boyfriends to celebrate the goddesses they are.

Plenty of people in Carmel also bonded over brunch on Wednesday at Cafe Patachou in Carmel's Clay Terrace.

"Because friendship is important," said Allie Missler. "If we don't celebrate the good times and only wait to talk to each other in the bad times, the bond isn't as strong."

"My husband's a firefighter," said Jessica Maners. "Her husband's a police officer, so we're home a lot with the kids while they're working and this is my sanity, meeting up with her and letting me have some adult time, minus my kids."

"I think it’s just important to get together with someone you know gets you and who won’t judge you for all the crazy things you’re going to say," said Brooke Carlson.

More lunch hour bonds were being built at Guion Creek Middle School in Pike Township. That's when some girls get together with their mentor as part of Girls Inc.

"I like it and I thought it was going to be fun and it is," said 12-year-old Erin Stringer.

The program encourages young women to be strong, smart and bold. Already, they understand the importance of having good girl friends.

"We can go to them for advice and talk to them about personal stuff and have girl talk and all that," said Stringer.

"You can do whatever you put your mind to," said Elyssa Campodonico-Barr, who is the president and CEO of Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis. "You can do it. Take risks. And when you fail, they lift you up when you’re down. And I think that’s what Galentine's Day and spirit of Galentine's Day is all about: making sure that we have those support systems as women and that we’re lifting one another up."

If you and the girls want to go out on Wednesday and do something fun that's also for a good cause, you can check out to Plenty Lifestyle in Broad Ripple. They're doing an event from 6-8 p.m.
