Gary man struck, killed while changing flat tire on I-65 in Lake County

LOWELL, Ind. (WTHR) - A man was struck and killed by a car around 1:14 a.m. Monday while changing a flat tire on I-65 near Lowell in Lake County, Indiana.

Police say a 2012 For Focus — driven by 58-year-old Atanas Z. Popoy of Hobart, Ind. — was traveling southbound on I-65 at the 243 mile marker. A 2000 Oldsmobile Alero was parked on the right shoulder with its emergency hazards flashing.

The driver of the Alero was standing outside the car, attempting to change a flat tire on the front driver's side. For unknown reasons, the Ford Focus drifted over the fog line, sideswiped the Alero and also struck the man kneeling down changing the flat tire.

When Indiana State Troopers arrived on scene, they found a woman walking away from the scene. She was a passenger in the Alero at the time of the crash.

She was not injured and was uncooperative with police. She told police she was looking for the driver wh had been changing the tire, but couldn't find him.

Troopers then found the body of 55-year-old Gregory G. Davis of Gary, Indiana lying about 150 feet from the car.
