INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – The White River is a little cleaner this weekend, thanks to hundreds of volunteers.

Friends of the White River helped to organize Saturday's clean-up along with Citizens Energy Group.

It was the 31st year that they've gotten together to pick up trash and litter from around the river.

"The river is something that when people discover it, I've had people that have been doing this like myself for 31 years and some this is their first clean-up," said Kevin Hardie, Friends of The White River Executive Director. "But when they do discover they can make a difference, they decide ok, I'm going to invest more time and effort in that and that's where we really build community."

Since starting these clean-ups 31 years ago, volunteers have collected more than two million pounds of trash and illegally dumped debris from the river's banks.
