INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Indianapolis Animal Care Services has a heartwarming new program to help its dogs.

It's called the "Freedom for a Day" program.

It's designed to allow dogs who've spent more than 30 days in the shelter to get out for a day. The program helps relieve stress for the dog and gives them a chance to show their true personality. The idea is that IACS can then share the photos of that day out and hopefully get the dog adopted.

So we decided to put it to the test and playing with a dog all day is a great way to spend a Monday.

Our Mary Milz was placed with a dog named Ferris and this is how they are spending the day.

If you're interested in the program or in adopting dogs like Ferris, you can visit the shelter at 2600 S Harding St, Indianapolis, IN 46221 or call (317) 327-1397.

11 p.m. — IACS received several calls about Ferris throughout the day while Mary walked him around the city. We're happy to report he is home with a family tonight.

5:55 p.m. — Ferris wraps up his fun day off with Mary. We're sad to say good-bye but you can adopt Ferris at Indianapolis Animal Care Services.

5:28 p.m. — Ferris gets a shout-out from IFD!

4:56 p.m. — What a great doggy. Too bad we can't have a newsroom pup.
