NORTH VERNON, Ind. (WTHR) - Firefighters from several departments are battling a blaze in Jennings County.

The fire is at a scrap facility off SR 50 on the northeast corner of the Muscatatuck Wildlife Preservation Area near North Vernon. Plumes of thick black smoke could be seen from miles away on Interstate 65.

Water and wind are posing challenges for firefighters at the scene. With no hydrants in the rural area, firefighters counted on a continuous line of tanker trucks to shuttle water to the site. Occasional wind gusts were also making firefighting efforts difficult.

Firefighters appeared to have a handle on the blaze around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
