INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Firefighters had to deal with bitter cold late Wednesday as they worked to put out a fire in a church.

The blaze broke out around 11 p.m. at Kappes Street and Miller Street, just west of downtown.

A person who called 911 told dispatchers that there might be people inside the church but fortunately that turned out not to be the case.

IFD got help from Wayne Township firefighters to put out the fire in the basement ceiling and in the main floor.

About 40 percent of the church was damaged in the fire.
