INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - People are feeling the excitement of race weekend all across central Indiana.

That includes the Indianapolis Zoo, where they had the 40th running of the "Zoopolis 500" Wednesday, the greatest spectacle in tortoise racing!

Tortoises named Alexander, Ed, Pippa, and Simon faced off to see who could get to the fruit quickest, while families watched in the rain. Driver Tony Kanaan was supposed to wave the green flag, but he let one of his boys do it instead.

"It's always fun. It's nice to see the kids cheering for the turtles," said Kanaan. "This is an event I've been doing for 11 years and having the chance to meet with the kids, get that good energy, that innocent energy before a race for me, it's refreshing."

Ed came in first, Simon the tortoise finished second and Pippa was third. Alexander the tortoise was a little off the pace and he came in last, but they all enjoyed fruit at the end.
