Dozens of crashes reported during winter weather event in Indy metro area

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Weather and road conditions likely played a role in a chain of crashes on Interstate 65 near 71st Street.

They happened just after midnight Saturday morning on an icy stretch of the highway. Sleet and freezing rain had been reported in the area.

Indiana State Police at the Indianapolis Post said the incident involved multiple cars and several separate crashes or slide offs.

Zionsville Fire assisted at the scene and reported 7 crashes with three minor injuries.

A pedestrian suffered minor injuries when struck by a car at about the same time in that area.

That crash is also under investigation.

In twelve hours from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday, Indianapolis Metro Police worked 49 property damage crashes, and 19 injury crashes including a fatality crash at 86th Street and Township Line Road.

Other departments in central Indiana were busy responding to incidents.
