INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - April is National Donate Life Month and the 10th anniversary of St. Vincent Hospital's kidney transplant program.

On Friday, they honored living kidney donors. Several kidney donors and their recipients came to St Vincent to celebrate.

Deb Peters and Brenda Tolson are longtime friends with work and church in common. Brenda has had kidney disease for years, and when Deb heard Brenda's kidneys were failing?

"She walked up to me in church and said 'I want to donate you a kidney' and I was like 'I just lost my husband and I'm losing my health. She's just an angel from Heaven,'" Brenda said.

"Yeah, as friends and Christians, that's what you're supposed to do," Deb said.

But it turns out Deb wasn't a good match for Brenda.

"So i donated to someone else and someone else donated to her," said Deb.

Both had surgery last year and are doing well, their close bond now even stronger

"I wish more people would be able to do that, to give of themselves to help someone else," Deb added.
