CHETA BI, Algeria (WTHR) - An American warplane from World War II has been discovered underwater in the Mediterranean Sea.

Divers went down to the wreckage off the coast of Algeria after it was located by fishermen who, at first, thought they had caught a whale.

Instead, the plane was identified as a Douglas bomber-hunter that was used by the United States during the war. Locals believe the plane was downed by anti-aircraft fire in 1942.

The wreckage is offshore from a fishing port in eastern Algeria, more than 300 miles east of Algiers.

One member of the dive team called it an extraordinary find, saying "this is history itself."
