MOORESVILLE, N.C. (WTHR) – Brenda Jackson, the mother of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and a longtime employee for JR Motorsports, has passed away at the age of 65.

The team announced the sad news Monday.

Jackson passed away following a battle with cancer.

She worked with JR Motorsports for about 15 years but the team says her presence in racing covered a lifetime.

Jackson was known to be devoted to her children Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kelley Earnhardt Miller.

"During Dale Jr.’s well-documented battle with concussions, she was a staunch supporter of his decision to retire from full-time racing, JR Motorsports wrote. "She also was a tireless supporter of The Dale Jr. Foundation and other charitable efforts."

Back in February, Dale Earnhardt Jr. shared rare photos of his father on the 18th anniversary of his passing.

Dale Earnhardt passed away in 2001, after a crash during the last lap of the Daytona 500. Earnhardt was 49.
