Crews cover Meridian Street sinkhole for safety precautions

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — A sinkhole on Meridian Street downtown has been covered as a safety precaution until a crew can fix it.

Crews placed a metal sheet over the sinkhole around 11:30 a.m.

On Wednesday morning, the sinkhole had closed part of the northbound lane near Maryland Street. That is back open, however, there is a no parking sign where the sinkhole is.

The hole is about four feet wide on the far right lane right in front of Hard Rock Cafe, on the northeast side of the intersection.

Citizens Energy says the hole is not related to sewer, water, natural gas or thermal systems.

Citizens is working with the Department of Public Works and other utilities to identify the problem and pursue a repair.

Citizens Energy crews responded to the scene and have covered the hole.
