Crews begin draining downtown canal for cleaning project

Canal gets deep cleaning
Canal drained

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - If you come downtown over the holidays, you'll notice something unusual about the canal.

To begin with, the water level is low.

Crews began draining the canal Friday morning to remove the algae and other plant growth.

They're also safely removing fish and other living creatures.

The last time they drained the water to clean it was 2007.

The project will be complete by March.
