INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Metro police are investigating a shooting near 38th Street and Sherman Drive on the east side that left a man dead.

The coroner is identifying that man as 24-year-old Jordan Wells

Police say Wells was found in the parking lot of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church. Police believe the victim was walking across the church parking lot when someone approached him, firing shots.

Medics transported him to Methodist Hospital in critical condition. Police said he victim later died.

Police have not released any suspect information.

Someone from the church told Eyewitness News that there was at least one other witness to the crime.

People we talked with say they heard multiple shots fired. A nearby daycare that's part of another church locked down the building after the incident.

"The east side can be dangerous," said Frank Jameson, a retired IMPD detective who brought his granddaughter to a park behind the church on Wednesday afternoon. "A lot of stuff happens out on the east side."

Jameson says he tries to avoid talking about violence with his granddaughter, but knows it's part of the world she's growing up in.

"I've seen enough stuff in my career that I was glad when I retired," said Jameson. "It probably wasn't random. It was probably targeted. I'm just guessing, but very few shootings are random. Very few."

Anyone with information can call Marion County Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
