LAWRENCE (WTHR) - A Lawrence teenager is dead after a shooting early Thursday morning.

Sixteen-year-old Shiloh Britton was found at Maison Garden apartments in the family’s second floor unit near 42nd and Post about 7:15 Thursday morning.

“When officers and medics arrived unfortunately the victim was unresponsive and did not survive her injuries. Detectives are investigating right now it is considered unknown circumstances, a death investigation. We treat investigations like that as though they were homicides until we determine exactly what the circumstances were,” said Lawrence Deputy Police Chief Gary Woodruff.

"At 7, I just heard the mom screaming and yelling, 'Help me! Help me! My baby! My baby! My baby!' and I'm, like, 'Jesus, Jesus.' I just ran up and I just started praying," said neighbor Katurah Allen.

Woodruff said people heard some kind of disturbance sometime before the shooting.

"We have been told that there may have been some neighbors, they may have heard a possible disturbance in that apartment throughout the course of the night. Don't believe police were called on that," Woodruff said. "This is a 16-year-old girl. A tragedy no matter what. There’s a grieving family here."

Police are still investigating and have not yet named a suspect in the case. They say the general public is not at risk.

Shiloh attended school in Lawrence Township. The district released a written statement late this afternoon:

“The MSD of Lawrence Township was saddened to learn of the death of a current student on Thursday morning. Our deepest sympathies go out to her family, friends, and teachers. Trained counselors are available at impacted buildings to talk with any student or staff member in need of support. As this is an open investigation, we are in full cooperation with the Lawrence Police Department.”
