JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) - Center Grove Schools is asking for understanding as the school district investigates its head football coach, a situation the superintendent calls a "very difficult time for the community."

Last week, 13 Investigates revealed Center Grove Schools hired an outside investigator to look into multiple reports that longtime coach Eric Moore has abused his position by engaging in verbal abuse, intimidation and bullying towards students and staff. The investigation has been ongoing since February.

Thursday, Arkanoff sent an e-mail message to families in the Center Grove Community. The message, signed by the superintendent and members of the Center Grove school board, says:

“The past week has been a difficult one in our community. Local media outlets have reported about an investigation into allegations made against Coach Eric Moore. While we cannot provide details regarding the ongoing investigation, we recognize that this is a very difficult time for our community, especially for the families who are involved. As you know, the well-being of our students is our top priority. We also have an important responsibility to ensure our staff members are treated fairly. In order to fulfill both of these responsibilities, we must take seriously any allegations made against a staff member brought to our attention. We determined an outside, unbiased, and independent investigation was appropriate in this situation. Please know that the existence of the investigation is not an indication of guilt or proof of innocence. Our commitment to serving the best interest of our students remains our primary focus. Our high school principal, Mr. Henderson, is working diligently with his staff to ensure support is available to students. We welcome the information and support many of you have shared and appreciate your understanding during this process.”

The school district has received dozens of letters from the community in support of Moore, who is now in his 18th season as Center Grove’s football and boys track coach. Moore has also received backing through yard signs and social media. The latest support comes from a lengthy video posted on Facebook that includes testimonials from school staff, parents and former players.

At the same time, additional families are still coming forward to share concerns about how the coach has treated some current and former students. The school's independent investigator continues to conduct interviews with those alleging misconduct. The investigation, originally scheduled to be completed by early this week, now has no definitive conclusion date.

WTHR is still hearing daily from both the coach's supporters and those expressing concerns and will continue to update this story as the investigation progresses.
