VICTORIA, Canada (WTHR) — When it comes to littering, one Canadian police department is not messing around.

Victoria Police Chief Del Manak said he gave a $575 (about $432 in U.S. currency) ticket to a driver who tossed a lit cigarette out the window Saturday.

"575 reasons to not throw your lit cigarette out the car window in front of @vicpdcanada," Manak tweeted.

Manak said when he asked the driver why he threw the cigarette but out instead of properly disposing of it, the driver said he didn't want his car to burn.

"Then don't smoke in your car," the chief said he told the driver.

Manak cited the Wildfire Act to justify the ticket, saying he risked an open fire by mishandling a burning substance.
