California police officer shot, killed while responding to crash

DAVIS, Calif. (WTHR) — A police officer is Davis, California has died after a shooting while responding to a three-vehicle crash.

Natalie Corona was a 22-year-old officer with the Davis Police Department. Around 7 p.m. Thursday, Corona responded to a crash in downtown Davis. Department Chief Darren Pytel said shots were fired during the investigation, and Corona was struck. Nearby firefighters immediately responded medics transported her to the hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, Corona died at the hospital.

After a manhunt throughout town, the suspected shooter was found dead in a home just before 1 a.m. Friday, according to NBC affiliate KCRA-TV. He appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Corona had recently completed her training at the police academy in July 2018. She had only been out on her job on her own for a couple of weeks since completing field training.
