LA PORTE COUNTY (WNDU) - La Porte County police are investigating an attempted child abduction after a man reportedly tried to put a 1-year-old boy in a duffel bag.

NBC station WNDU reports a homeowner in the Fish Lake area told police at 6:15 p.m. (Central) on Thursday that he had been outside in the yard with his 1-year-old son when a man approached from a vehicle that was parked near the end of the driveway.

The man asked the homeowner for some water. When he leaded through a sliding glass door to get the water, the suspect grabbed the child and tried to put him in a duffel bag.

According to police, the homeowner physically confronted the suspect. He got his son back inside the house, but by the time he went back outside, the suspect was driving away in a silver or gray 1990's style minivan.

The suspect was described as a white male with beard stubble, wearing a white T-shirt and gray camouflage shorts.

Anyone who may have witnessed the vehicle in the Fish Lake area or has information about what happened is asked to call the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office at (219) 326-7700.
