INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - A civil rights advocate from Atlanta is visiting Indianapolis to help push for peace.

Reverend Markel Hutchins met with Marion County Sheriff John Layton, IMPD Chief Bryan Roach and FOP President Rick Snyder. He wants Indy to become the first city in the country to implement his "One Congregation, One Precinct (OneCOP)" initiative, which focuses on strengthening police-community relations using houses of worship.

"There's a great opportunity. There's a great need for young people to get to know the police officers that work in their communities. There's a great need for community citizens that continue to grapple with crime and violence to become more situationally aware, and these faith-based institutions are ideal entry points," Hutchins said.

The goal is to launch the initiative in Indianapolis at the end of next month.
