Arrest made in shooting death of man on near-north side Friday night

IMPD Homicide detectives have arrested 25-year-old Lamar Wooden on a preliminary charge of murder for his alleged involvement in the killing of 40-year-old Gerald Eldridge.

Based upon witness statements, Wooden and Eldridge were attending a family birthday party at a residence in the 3200 block of North Arsenal Avenue. When Gerald Eldridge saw Lamar Wooden arrive at the birthday party, Eldridge left the party due to past encounters with Wooden. Detectives allege Wooden began firing shots at Eldridge's vehicle as he fled the 3200 block of North Arsenal Avenue.  Wooden then got into a vehicle and began chasing Eldridge's vehicle westbound along East 30th Street.  Eldridge’s vehicle then crashed in the 700 block of East 30th Street, and witnesses observed a gray Camero speeding away northbound on College Avenue after the crash.  Eldridge was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Shortly after the shooting, an IMPD officer observed a male on the front porch of a residence in the 3200 block of North Arsenal Avenue, but the male quickly went into the house upon the officer shining his vehicle spotlight on the house.  The male matched the witnesses’ description of Lamar Wooden.  The officer also noticed a gray Camero parked on the street a few houses down.  The IMPD SWAT team was requested to the residence, and Lamar Wooden surrendered without incident.  Wooden was transported to the IMPD Homicide office, where he was subsequently arrested for murder.

The case will be reviewed by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office for a charging decision.
