FORT WORTH, Texas (WTHR) - American Airlines is joining other airlines in tightening restrictions for passengers flying with emotional support animals.

The new changes include banning certain animal types, including insects, hedgehogs, goats and ferrets. Other animals barred from flying include non-household birds and animals with tusks, horns or hooves.

American says it will now enforce the existing 48-hour advanced notice and pre-clearance policy for emotional support animals. However, they will have procedures in place for emergency travel booked within 48 hours of departure.

The new rules go into effect July 1.
