SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WTHR) - After a roughly four-hour delay, race cars hit the track for IndyCar testing and rookie orientaion at IMS.

Raindrops began falling 11 minutes into an IndyCar test at IMS, sending cars and drivers back to the garage.

Drivers were anxious to get back on the track for the test, trying to turn as many laps as possible before May. They were testing a new safety feature called the "Advanced Frontal Protection," a titanium piece in front of the cockpit. It is designed to deflect debris away from the driver.

Only 11 drivers recorded laps before the rain fell, with driver/owner Ed Carpenter topping the early speed chart with a lap of 220.817 MPH. Both Carpenter and James Hinchcliffe got five laps in, Marco Andretti and Graham Rahal turned four laps apiece.

The process to dry the track got underway around 1:30 p.m., with blower trucks slowly circling the 2 1/2-mile oval. Testing resumed shortly before 3:30 p.m.

Light rain started to fall again around 5 p.m., but not enough to stop the Rookie Orientation Program from getting underway at about 5:30 p.m.

An all-car practice session that was scheduled for 7:30 p.m. after the morning rain delay was later canceled.
