Added security measures continue next week at Arsenal Tech

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Students at Arsenal Tech will continue seeing additional security and other precautions next week.

School officials brought in a larger security presence Friday after multiple fights forced them to call in Metro Police Thursday afternoon. Officials Friday also put students on a more staggered lunch schedule and dismissed students on a staggered schedule.

The added efforts were successful enough, officials announced Friday afternoon they will continue the staggered lunches and dismissals plus increased campus security next week.

"With student cooperation and the support of our community partners, we will continue with a successful school year," the district said in a statement.

Metro Police say as many as 10 students started fighting in a courtyard around 1 p.m. Thursday and more than 100 students gathered to watch and record the fights on their phone cameras. IPS Police, IMPD and IFD firefighters responded to help resolve the situation.

Eight students suffered minor injuries, according to an IPS spokesperson. Most were treated on the scene, but three were taken to the hospital to be checked out. One of those hyperventilated, a second had a hand injury and a third hurt their ankle.

Thirteen students ended up in custody charged with disorderly conduct.
