BOSTON (NBC News) - Former Patriots star and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his jail cell early Wednesday morning. He was 27.

The Massachusetts Department of Corrections said he hanged himself with a bed sheet he attached to his cell window. He also tried to jam his door with various items from his cell.

Jail workers found him just after 3 a.m. They tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at an area hospital about an hour later.

Prison officials say the Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing unit at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts.

Hernandez was serving a life sentence for a murder conviction in 2013. He was acquitted just last week of a separate double murder from 2012.
