3 in custody after chase with shots fired ends near Fort Wayne Zoo

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WTHR) — Officials at Fort Wayne's Children's Zoo evacuated a section of the facility after a disturbance with shots fired ended near the zoo.

It happened Friday in the 3400 block of Wells Street.

Police officers, including a gang and violent crimes unit, had been investigating a reported disturbance near Wells Street and Fernhill Avenue. A reported chase ensued between two cars where shots were fired.

A vehicle crashed into a pole and two people fled from the car and into the zoo property. A portion of the zoo was secured while officers worked to locate the pair.

A third person was taken into custody elsewhere. The three suspects face charges including illegal possession of a handgun and criminal recklessness.

Police recovered guns during their investigation, in addition to drugs and paraphernalia.
