WALTON, Ind. (WTHR) - Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that killed two pedestrians in Cass County.

State police confirm to Eyewitness News the pedestrians were struck as they walked along the side of U.S. 35 just south of Walton Tuesday evening. Both pedestrians have died of their injuries.

The victims have been identified as 26-year-old Zachary Wines of Walton and 52-year-old Bryan Curry of Valparaiso.

Police have not yet determined why the men were in the roadway, but believe they were struck by a northbound vehicle. Police say the driver that struck the pedestrians left the scene of the crash. Investigators are battling harsh weather conditions as they try to determine the make and model of the vehicle that struck the victims and which direction it was headed as it left the scene.

Wines' father Paul is a volunteer firefighter in Walton and was among the first responders at the scene Tuesday night.

"I want whoever killed my son to come forward and take responsibility for what they've done. Both men were killed and left on the highway like dogs or like animals that were killed. Nobody else stopped until somebody saw them," Paul Wines said.

Investigators found two vehicles, which they believe were driven by the victims, parked on the east side of the highway with their engines running.

State police and Cass County deputies are investigating. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Indiana State Police Peru Post at 1-765-473-6666.
