1 dead in crash after fleeing police in Madison County

MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) — The Madison County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash that started after a driver fled from police.

The crash happened just before 3 a.m. when a Chesterfield police officer attempted to catch up with a vehicle that was traveling over 100 mph on East County Road 67 near State Road 300 East.

The driver proceeded to turn north onto State Road 300 East and then east on Mounds Road, but turned around at a dead end. The officer attempted to stop the car, however, the driver drove around the officer's vehicle and down through a ditch before losing control just west of Mounds State Park and slammed into a tree.

An 18-year-old passenger was able to climb out of the vehicle and found nearby. They were taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in fair condition. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and was still in the vehicle when responders arrived.

The identities of the driver and the passenger will be released when their families have been notified.
