A sprint car driver hit and killed by a car driven by NASCAR champion Tony Stewart will be laid to rest Thursday.

Kevin Ward, Jr. had spun out after a bump from Stewart on the dirt track. He got out of his car to confront Stewart and was hit.

"[Kevin] grew up a mile down the road from me. We played eight-man football together. I still remember that like it was yesterday," said a childhood friend at his memorial Wednesday.

The Ward family moved his funeral to Thursday to accommodate a larger-than-expected crowd of mourners.

Ward's father says there was no reason for the crash that led to his son's death.

Kevin Ward, Sr. told a newspaper, "The one person that knows what happened that night is possibly facing ten years in prison. Is he going to say what he done?"

He went on to say, "Apparently, Tony Stewart was the only one driving out there who didn't see him."

No charges have been filed against Stewart, but they are still possible.
