NEW YORK -
Social media is taking over Scrabble.
The words "hashtag" and "selfie" are now legal words to play in the popular board game. Five-thousand new words have been added in Merriam-Webster's newly-released fifth edition of the game's dictionary, the publisher announced.
Other new words include "emo," "bling," "mixtape," "beatbox," and "geocache."
The co-president of the North American Scrabble Players Association said the additions "go a long way toward bringing us closer to the language as it is currently spoken." Other updates include words and spellings used by Canadian and British speakers of English.
The new words add about 40 pages to the Scrabble-sanctioned dictionary, which already lists more than 100,000 playable words. The new edition of the last word on Scrabble words will be released next Monday by Merriam-Webster.
