INDIANAPOLIS -

Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann is applauding the work of 17 students as part of a contest meant to curb texting while driving.

Students from across the state submitted tweets, photos and other items urging their peers not to text while on the road. The winners of the "Drive Now. TXT L8R" contest will have $5,000 deposited in state 529 college savings accounts for them.

College and high school students were awarded the scholarships based on the number of tweets, likes on Instagram, creative use of video app Vine and other metrics for social media.

Ellspermann noted that texting drivers are 23 times more likely to get in an accident than someone who isn't texting. The contest was paid for with a federal grant.
