Back-to-school prices up from last year

Posted: Updated:

Summertime is flying by, with some schools just weeks away from starting.

The rush is on for back-to-school supplies.

This year, more than 1/3 of back-to-school shoppers expect to make some portion of their purchases online.

Families should expect to spend a little more on supplies this year, according to NRF's 2014 Back-to-School Survey.

If you have a child that's K-12, you will spend on average $669.28 on things like clothes, supplies and electronics. That's up 5 percent from last year.

If you have a child that's college-age, you will spend on average $916.48 on things like dorm furnishings, supplies and electronics, up 10 percent from the previous year.

Julie Law, a representative with the 1.1 million-square-foot Amazon Distribution Center in Whitestown, said that for moms, it can be really overwhelming getting ready for back-to-school.

"If you go to amazon.com/backtoschool, you can actually shop by curated lists by grade," she said. "So if you have a second grader, a junior high school student, the whole list is right there and makes it really easy to shop, get everything and preserve those last few days of summer with your family. They also have deals listed on that page, everything from laptops to Kindles."

Amazon is also offering same day shipping in the Indianapolis area.
