Being smart and aware key in avoiding violence

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS - The stress and concern about recent crimes, including the shooting deaths of two IMPD officers in less than a year, is taking its toll on the city as a whole.

The police department has stepped up its efforts to protect neighborhoods and combat the violence.

But does that mean you have to change your day to day habits?

I recently posed this question on my Facebook page: "Is the recent violence in Indianapolis causing you to change your routine?"

One response came from Margie Litz, who lives and works downtown.

"I don't think there's any reason to change your routine," she said.

Litz walks three to four miles every morning from her Virginia Avenue apartment to the downtown hotel district and back, and has no worries about her safety.

"My husband and I are out three to four times a week," she said. "We never have any fear."

That's what experts say is key. It's all about being smart and being aware, but not living in fear.
