A gel form of the breast cancer drug Tamoxifen may work as well as a pill and cause fewer side effects.

Researchers at Northwestern University tested the topical gel on 26 women. After 6-10 weeks, there were changes in the gene linked to breast tumors similar to those in women who took the pill form of the drug. Because less of the drug circulates in the blood in gel form, there may be a decreased risk of blood clots and uterine cancer.

If future studies show similar results, experts say Tamoxifen gel could one day become the standard for breast cancer prevention.
