Obesity rates on downward trend in NYC school children

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at the height and weight measurements of nearly one million New York City public school students in 2006, and again in 2011.

They found cases of severe obesity decreased roughly 10 percent during that time, and and obesity went down five percent.

Experts say healthier school menus, fewer sugary drinks in school vending machines and an emphasis on physical activity may have contributed to the weight loss.

Obesity rates were higher in minorities, boys, and children from poor families.
