Dark chocolate may help patients with peripheral artery disease

Posted: Updated:

Peripheral artery disease causes patients to have trouble walking and exercising because the blood flow to their limbs is impaired.

In a new study, researchers in Spain had 20 patients with this condition eat either dark or milk chocolate.

They found those who had dark chocolate were able to walk 11 percent farther than those who had milk chocolate. They also experienced an increase in blood flow.

Experts say dark chocolate is stacked with polyphenols, which help the blood vessels dilate.
